A defining measure of material innovation is bio-based content: the proportion of a material’s carbon that comes from renewable sources. Conventional synthetics, derived entirely from petroleum, register at 0% bio-based content. In contrast, plant-based alternatives achieve up to 90% bio-based carbon, dramatically reducing dependence on petrochemical feedstocks while also avoiding the environmental burdens of animal agriculture. This dual shift—away from oil and away from livestock—significantly lowers resource depletion and production emissions.
Equally important is biodegradability, the capacity of a material to break down through the action of microorganisms into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass without leaving harmful residues. Whereas petroleum-based fibres and many treated animal hides can persist in landfills for decades or centuries, plant-derived materials are designed with end-of-life responsibility in mind, allowing for reintegration into natural cycles under suitable conditions.
